Maybank Singapore Appoints Datuk Yee Yang Chien as New Chairman

SINGAPORE, October 3, 2024 – Maybank Singapore Limited (MSL) has announced the appointment of Datuk Yee Yang Chien as the new Chairman of its Board, effective October 1, 2024. Datuk Yee succeeds Datuk R. Karunakaran, who retired on September 30, 2024, after six years of service as Chairman of the Maybank Group.

Datuk Yee, who joined the Maybank Board as a Non-Independent Non-Executive Director in November 2023, brings over two decades of experience in both local and international financial institutions. His expertise spans external and internal audit, equity research, investment banking, and strategic leadership. He has also held key roles at MISC Berhad, a global shipping conglomerate, where he rose to the position of President and Group CEO before retiring in September 2022.

During his time at MISC, Datuk Yee played a critical role in executing the company’s strategic initiatives, including mergers and acquisitions, corporate bond issuance, and the launch of digital start-ups. His leadership and experience in driving large-scale transformations are expected to be instrumental in steering Maybank Singapore towards sustainable growth and innovation.

“We are confident that Datuk Yee’s leadership will further strengthen Maybank Singapore’s position as a key player in the region,” said the MSL Board. “His experience and vision will be invaluable as we continue to pursue growth and innovation.”

Datuk Yee holds a Double Degree in Accounting and Financial Management, and Economics from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom.

Maybank Singapore also expressed its gratitude to Datuk Karunakaran for his significant contributions since becoming Chairman in 2018, noting that his leadership played a key role in shaping the organisation’s forward-thinking approach and aligning it closely with the Bank’s strategic goals.
