BENGALURU: (India): The 27th edition of the Bengaluru Tech Summit (BTS) was inaugurated on November 19, 2024, by Karnataka’s Chief Minister, Mr. Siddaramaiah, at Bangalore Palace. This year’s theme, “Technology Unbound,” emphasizes the potential of technology to transcend boundaries and foster global partnerships.
The day also witnessed Sriharsha Majety, CEO & Co-Founder of Swiggy, being honoured by the Department of Electronics, IT & Bt, Government of Karnataka, for his outstanding contributions in establishing one of Karnataka’s pioneering and most inspiring startups at Bengaluru Tech Summit 2024.
The second day of the 27th Bengaluru Tech Summit 2024 featured a pivotal session on space technologies, highlighting the launch of the Draft Karnataka Space Technology Policy 2024-2029. This initiative aims to position Karnataka as a leading global destination for space technologies, leveraging its robust ecosystem comprising ISRO centers, public sector undertakings, academic institutions, and private aerospace companies.
The session commenced with keynote addresses from prominent figures in the space sector, including Dr. Somanath, Secretary of the Department of Space and Chairman of ISRO; Dr. B.K. Das, Director General of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO); and Ms. Anne Neuberger, Deputy National Security Advisor of the USA. They emphasized the importance of collaboration in advancing space technologies and innovation.
Dr. Somanath provided an overview of India’s space program, celebrating ISRO’s achievements and outlining its vision for 2047. He noted that the Indian Space Policy 2023 has accelerated innovation among startups, enabling them to demonstrate capabilities in launch vehicle and satellite manufacturing. He highlighted Bengaluru’s emergence as a hub for new space ventures.
Ms. Neuberger underscored the significance of India-USA cooperation in the space sector, identifying areas such as earth observation and cybersecurity as critical for mutual growth. She stressed that partnerships between private sectors in both countries could drive innovation significantly.
Dr. B.K. Das remarked on India’s transformation into a global superpower in defense technologies, projecting a USD 138 billion opportunity in the coming years. He noted that India’s defense exports are on the rise, with a target of USD 5 billion over the next five years.
During this session, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Department of Electronics, IT, Biotechnology and Science & Technology and DRDO to promote cooperation within Karnataka’s defense industrial ecosystem.
The highlight was the unveiling of the Draft Karnataka Space Technology Policy, which aims for Karnataka to capture 50% of India’s national market share in space technologies.
The summit marked the launch of India’s first Global Capability Centre (GCC) policy, aimed at enhancing collaboration with international partners. Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed with Switzerland and Finland, alongside a Letter of Intent with the Sharjah Innovation Authority from the UAE, highlighting Karnataka’s commitment to global cooperation in technology and innovation.
BTS 2024 facilitated connections between startups and over 50 leading global investors, who collectively represent a potential investment fund exceeding $17.5 billion. This initiative aims to enhance relationships between startups and investors, providing crucial funding opportunities for emerging companies.
During the inaugural ceremony, notable figures including Sriharsha Majety, CEO of Swiggy, were honored for their contributions to Karnataka’s startup ecosystem. Texas Instruments India also celebrated its 40th anniversary in Bengaluru, underscoring the city’s long-standing role in the tech industry.
The summit featured an exciting exhibition inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, showcasing cutting-edge technologies. A highlight included a dramatic display by the BTS Flying Man in a futuristic jet suit, symbolizing innovation and creativity in technology.
A significant announcement was the launch of the Nipuna Karnataka program, which aims to skill 100,000 individuals in advanced technologies over the next year. This initiative includes collaborations with major tech companies like Microsoft, Intel, Accenture, IBM, and the BFSI Consortium to provide training focused on high-demand sectors.
The establishment of a Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence was announced, designed to support AI startups through mentorship and access to resources. This initiative positions Karnataka as a hub for AI-driven innovations.
BTS 2024 attracted international delegations from over 50 countries, enhancing collaborative opportunities across various sectors. The event featured a multi-stage conference covering topics from IT and biotech to deep tech trends.
The summit included a plenary panel discussion titled “FutureScape: Redefining What’s Next,” featuring prominent leaders from Karnataka’s tech industry discussing future trends and innovations.
A new platform aimed at empowering startups was introduced at BTS 2024. It focuses on connecting startups with investors and mentors while providing infrastructure support for prototype development.
